BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe
Generations Timeline, Specs and Pictures
Developed just in time to snatch some sales from the second-generation Mercedes-Benz CLA, the BMW 2-Series Gran Coupe is the first of its kind on the Bavarian lineup.
Just like the CLA, which is its only direct rival, the 2-Series Gran Coupe is marketed as a four-door coupe, a sportier alternative to the more classically-styled BMW 1 Series Sedan. It’s not the first compact BMW to be available in the United States, but it will be the cheapest not-counting its M-Performance version.
Despite being exclusively built in Leipzig, Germany, almost 20 percent of all cars built will find their way into the U.S. after the 2-Series Gran Coupe has its world premiere and the 2019 Los Angeles Auto Show. Based on the UKL2 front-wheel-drive architecture, which BMW initially developed for its MINI lineup, the model is focusing most of its credentials on design features. Just like the Mercedes-Benz CLA, the doors feature frameless windows and the roof is a lot more sloped towards the rear compared to a regular sedan, such as the 1 Series. This translates into a sportier shape but slightly lower headroom, especially for the rear passengers. The 2-Series Gran Coupe will be available with both front-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive, with the top engine versions being offered strictly with AWD.
