The BMW 5 series station wagon version was introduced in 2010, at the Leipzig Auto Show.
In 2013, the station wagon, named Touring in the BMW range, received a facelift, along with the entire 5-series.
The 5-Series Touring was the version for those who require a bigger load capacity. With the rear seats up, it offered 560 liters (19.7 cu-ft) of space. The rear backseat could fold down in a 40:20:40 split system. With all the seats down, the flat platform allowed a large, 1670 liters (58.9 cu-ft) trunk space. To fold the rear seats, a pair of levers were on the sides, in the trunk compartment.
There were two interesting features for the tailgate. The rear window within the tailgate could have been open independently. When opened, the trunk fabric cover was automatically retracted. This feature was good if only a small item was placed inside. The load compartment cover was automatically lowered when the window or the tailgate was closed.
To open the trunk, there were few options: a button on the car-remote access key, a button near the driver, a kick under the rear bumper or, classically, via a small button on the tailgate. The “hands-free” open system was available as an option.
There were two buttons on the tailgate’s margin, which could be used to automatically close the trunk. One was just closing while the other also locked the car. As a safety measure, the car couldn’t be locked if the remote-control key was inside the cabin.
