MERCEDES BENZ Typ 200
Generations Timeline, Specs and Pictures

Derived from the Typ 170, the 200 model was a sophisticated, elegant ride with a straight 6-cylinder petrol unit displacing 2.0 L capable of 40 hp which pushed the car to top speed of 98 kmh (61 mph) via a 4-speed transmission linked to a rear-wheel drive. The car had a rather advanced level of equipment at the time with four-wheel hydraulic brakes and a modern suspension system comprising a rear floating axle with coil springs and front axle mated to transversely mounted leaf-springs. Shortly after its release, the car came to replace the Stuttgart 200 and Stuttgart 260 models.

The 2-door version of the typ 200 emerged as an exotic retractable soft-top ride with a baroque styling that made it highly desirable.
However, ownership came with a hefty price tag. But who wouldn’t have payed to have such a beauty? Easy distinguishable from the saloon through its manually operated soft-top kept in place by to articulated chrome arms, the Cabrio had an elongated rear complete with a spare wheel mount while the door sills and wheel arches had been enlarged to achieve that epoch luxury look. The car’s lines were made curvier while access was done through a suicide door-opening system.
