While the D type had much of a grand tourer appearance with a retractable rear-folding soft-top and a large open top compartment, the F model was rather more conservative of its cabrio origins, boasting a more elegant look.
Although many a workshops back then were responsible for MB bodywork, the F type was considerably smaller than its touring sibling and all together rounder. Because of the variety of coachwork and the nearly identical appearance of both vehicles it was rather hard to tell one from another. However, the F mode did tend to have shorter rear doors and spare wheels mounted closer to the front doors.
