With the obsolete knocking on the door by 1991, the Pajero went through a radical series of changing from body styling to underpinnings, managing to keep a head place in its class.
Bodies were generally lengthened with the short-wheel base having been stretched an extra 2.8 in compared to the LWB which saw a 1.2 in length increase. The cars was the introduction of a 2.5 L turbocharged inter cooled Diesel and a 3.0 L electronic injection petrol unit, both linked to an optional Super Select four-wheel drive system. Later engine additions included a turbocharged 2.8 L Diesel unit and a large 3.5 L V6 plant.
