The 1999 Alero was launched in both a coupe and sedan version as a e replacement for the unpopular Achieva.
Having taken style elements from the Pontiac Grand Am, the Alero was available with four trims, GX, GL and GLS, the first having been the entry-level equipment package. The first two trims came with a standard dual camshaft 4-cylinder engine while the top-level GLX came with a larger V6 unit. Power plants were coupled with standard 4-speed automatic transmissions and active safety features such as anti-lock brakes and traction control were standard on all vehicles.
