The origins of the Cutlass can be traced back to the mid 50’s when an experimental sports coupe was developed by the Oldsmobile engineering team.
Built on a new A platform, the Cutlass was powered by a new all-aluminum 3.5 L V8 engine that developed 155 hp and 284 Nm of maximum torque. Equipped with state-of-the-art suspension comprised of a front double-wishbone and four-link coil spring live rear axle, the Cutlass, also dubbed as the F-85, reached a maximum speed close to 100 mph and accelerated from 0 to 60 in close to 15 seconds. Despite its overall good performance, the car’s steering and suspension tuning were below sporty driving requirements.
